Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

If you are so nervous about undergoing dental treatment that you’d rather suffer from toothaches, you are not alone. Many people worry about going to the dentist so much that they delay or don’t even seek treatment.

However, a simple solution to this problem is now available - sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry can help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your dental treatment and is a safe and effective way to remain anxiety-free when visiting the dentist. Dr. Jason Lemmon has years of experience in this field, helping those undergoing invasive treatments or with severe dental anxiety get the treatments they need.

What Is Sedation Dentistry Used For?

There are a number of situations sedation dentistry is recommended for, including:

  • If you’re getting worked up about having a treatment done
  • If you have very sensitive teeth
  • If you’re having an extensive, invasive dental procedure
  • If you respond poorly to local anesthetics

Throughout your procedure, we’ll put you at ease about the treatment you’re receiving, offering the most efficient and effective solutions available.

What Forms of Sedation Are Available?

At our dentist practice in Yuma, Arizona, we offer three types of sedation:

Inhaled Minimal Sedation (Nitrous Oxide): A mask is placed over your nose so you inhale a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), which helps you relax. This type of sedation allows us to control how much sedation you get, and also enables you to recover quickly from your sedation, perhaps even driving home after the procedure has been done.

Oral Sedation: Minimal to moderate sedation can be administered orally. Minimal doses are provided in the form of a pill and make you feel drowsy, but you’ll remain awake throughout the procedure. Larger doses provide moderate sedation that often induces sleep while the treatment is being carried out. However, you can be awakened with a gentle shake.

IV Conscious Sedation: For this type of sedation, the drug is administered intravenously using an IV drip. This allows us to control the level of sedation you receive and, because it’s put directly into your vein, its effects are quicker.
