Why do my gums hurt when I brush my Teeth?

Dentists recommend you brush and floss at least twice a day to ensure good oral hygiene. Despite best efforts, though, you may sometimes experience gum pain whenever you brush. The pain may occur between your teeth, all over your gums, on top of one of your teeth, or in the back of the mouth. Gum pain is the sign of an underlying condition that needs to be assessed, pronto, by a dentist. In this blog, we will talk about a few conditions that may be causing your gum pain.

  • Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a condition caused by plaque buildup in your mouth that attacks the bones and tissues supporting your teeth. Besides causing pain, periodontitis also slowly erodes your gum while making your teeth become loose. Symptoms to watch out for periodontitis include swollen gums, bleeding gums, red or purple gums, bad breath, pain while chewing, and change in bite.

  • Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that is mild in nature. When you're afflicted with gingivitis, you will experience redness, inflammation, and irritation of your gums at the bottom of the teeth. It could cause soreness, tear gums, and bleed easily.

  • Rough brushing

Some people are overly aggressive with their brushing or flossing habits, and this may cause soreness in the gum.

  • Mouth ulcers

Also known as Canker Sores, these are ulcers that form on the gums or on the inner cheek's lining. They are red in color with a white coating and are non-contagious but can cause considerable distress.

  • Allergic reaction

If you're using dental products that are causing allergic reactions, you are likely to feel pain in your gums.

In short, gum pain is usually a mild inconvenience that can be rid of with a visit to the dentist. So, if you have any signs of the above-mentioned gum conditions, visit your dentist to remedy the situation quickly and effectively.
