Everything You Need to Know About Oral Surgery

Any surgical procedure performed in and around your mouth and jaw is known as oral surgery.

At Picacho Family Dental Implant Center in Yuma, Arizona, Dr. Lemmon has years of experience treating complex dental issues and performing dental surgeries. Keep reading to learn more about the most common types of dental surgery procedures we offer patients.

Common Types of Dental Surgery

The most common types of dental surgery procedures include:

Wisdom Tooth Removal

In some cases, wisdom teeth can cause issues like impacted, trapped, or misaligned teeth. These conditions may lead to pain and misalignment of the other teeth. In addition, wisdom teeth are more prone to tooth decay or infection.

In these cases, the dentist will suggest dental surgery to remove the wisdom tooth.

Jaw Surgery

Patients suffering from jaw misalignment issues or that have suffered injuries to the mouth may require maxillofacial surgery. This type of oral surgery can relieve pain and enable patients to eat and speak properly.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that requires treatment either with mouthguards, special machines that keep the airway open at night, or oral surgery. In the case of sleep apnea surgery, the surgeon will remove part of the tissue in the back of your throat to clear the airway and alleviate the sleep apnea symptoms.

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth. To place the restoration, Dr. Lemmon will make a small incision into the gum and insert a small post into the jawbone. The post will then fuse with the jawbone and, once it’s healed, it will become the support of the artificial tooth.

Dental implants are a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth and look and feel just like natural teeth.

Foods to Eat After Oral Surgery

The success of oral surgeries depends on how you manage the recovery. You should give yourself a minimum of two days to recover from the surgery.

During the healing period, you should eat soft and cold foods and regularly rinse your mouth with saltwater. This way, you will be safe from any kind of risks and complications.
